Eccentric Rehabilitation Exercise for Achilles Tendinosis
Huntington Beach/ Fountain Valley CA
I ran across some good information about training for old and fresh sports injuries. This study was specifically talking about Achillies Tendonitis or tendinosis rather, which is really just old chronic tendonitis.
Here’s a summary:
Achilles Tendonitis Eccentric Strengthening:
- Small sample (26 tendons) with tendinosis for an average of 17.1 months.
- 12 week eccentric program used
- Follow-up: Average 3.8 years post program.
- 88% patient subjective satisfaction
- Ultrasound finding consisted of “decreased tendon thickness and normalized tendon structure”
What is being tested is a group of old Achilles Tendon injuries, which had responded minimally in prior rehabilitation and for that reason where used in this study. Each test subject was placed in a 12-week eccentric, or lengthening contraction, program. The traditional approach to rehabilitation of Achilles Tendinosis usually consists of shortening contractions (such as lifting a dumbbell with a bicep curl).
The study revealed 88% of the people who used an eccentric strengthening program were satisfied for an average 3.8 years after the program!
Now that is what I call recovery!
Personally, I believe eccentric training will soon be the preferred method of treatment for aging sports injuries in the near future. If you have any questions about how eccentric training can be used for your old sports injury give us a shout and we would love to help you out.
