Ankle Sprain Treatment
Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley CA
Sprain an ankle before?
If you have you can probably remember black and blue swelling for a period of a week or so, with weeks of inactivity to follow. This is the textbook presentation but some athletes will have no swell or bruising at all, but MOST ALL WILL REST THE ANKLE FOR MORE THAN A WEEK.
I have a few friends who were lucky enough to sprain an ankle in high school and they continue to wear an ankle brace when the play basketball even to this day. There is something wrong with this! There should be a way to heal ankle sprains and re-strengthen the area so they do not occur.
How to heal ankle sprains
Sprained ankles are not the end of your sport career or any reason to label yourself as having “weak ankles.” All it takes is a systematic approach to the injury and you will be 100% in no time.
To properly treat a sprained ankle you have to understand what a sprained ankle is. When an ankle turns over, rapid lengthening of the ligaments, tendons and muscles occur leading to small or large tears in the tissues. If the tearing is large enough, a pop might be heard, which can accompany bruising and swelling.
Regardless of the size of the tear, the body heals the areas with scar tissue. Scar tissue is weaker, less flexible and more prone to re-tearing than normal tissue. This scar tissue is the reason for repeated ankle sprains and the feeling helplessness people feel with “weak ankles.”
What type of treatment works for sprained ankles?
Here is the step-by-step approach used at P2 Sports Care:
- Remove scar tissue from involved ligaments, tendons and muscles
- Re-strengthen tissues involved
- Re-educate proprioception
- Re-educated the patient how to walk normally without guarding
